Diary from Kenya – Menstrual hygiene

May 8th – International Menstrual Hygiene Day

On Wednesday, we reached 55 beneficiaries in the Mlango Kubwa slum during a day dedicated to raising awareness about menstrual hygiene. Together with the boys and girls, we openly addressed a topic that is still too often considered taboo.

We debunked myths and misconceptions about menstruation: we learned and demonstrated how to use sanitary pads correctly, discussed “warning signs” of the menstrual cycle, and what to do in case of concerning symptoms. We also addressed the shame often associated with menstruation, creating a space for open listening and honest dialogue.

The boys understood the importance of no longer mocking girls during their periods and decided to promote a respectful, empathetic, and understanding attitude.

At the end of the session, we distributed personal hygiene kits: soap and sanitary pads for the girls, and soap and boxer shorts for the boys.
