Psychosocial support for refugees

Thanks to funding from UNHCR, GRT was able to set up an integrated project in Somaliland of both prevention and psychosocial intervention activities.
The project targets asylum seekers, refugees and internally displaced persons in Hargeisa. The focus is in particular on children, adolescents and young refugees.

GRT conducted several activities with different methodologies:

Training to local partners

  • Training on comprehensive needs assessment skills of the actors involved, final evaluation, report writing and analysis
  • Peer-to-peer training by external senior staff experienced in gender-based violence
6 trainings on mental health and psychosocial support

Clinical Support and Supervision

  • Clinical supervision by GRT in supporting the management of the most complex cases
  • Creation of community discussion groups
  • GRT referred 30 refugees and displaced persons to the mental health department in Hargeisia

Awareness-raising activities

  • Awareness-raising activities in the local community on the protection of refugees, asylum seekers and IDPs it hosts.

The intervention specifically aimed to provide timely psychosocial and mental health support to beneficiaries. In particular, it aimed to improve the capacities of local partners in responding appropriately and promptly to the needs of victims of sexual or gender-based violence.
